The $1 billion in federal funds withdrawn by the USDA from Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement Program and the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program in March 2025 threatens both children’s nutrition and the viability of small and mid-sized farmers who expanded operations to meet school contracts. Funding for local food for schools is an investment in children’s health, farmers’ livelihoods, and the resilience of our communities. Eliminating this support is not just shortsighted – it’s harmful.
